Children who grow up in orphan centres are raised by caregivers. Those caregivers shape the next generation every day, often with very little support for themselves. Since 2021 we have worked with Love and Care Ethiopia to change that.

Character first

In 2021 the Love and Care team prepared a training for more than fifteen orphan centres, on character building. Our founder wrote afterwards that his call is working on people, and that we need a generation who are strong in character. Children learn character from the adults closest to them, so we started with the adults.

When conflict comes

In November 2022 we spent a whole month on conflict resolution skills with caregivers from more than twenty orphan centres. Caregivers need a way to bring disagreements to a peaceful end: to resolve them and come up with solutions.

Parenting, for people who are not parents

In December 2022 we ran a month of parenting training for caregivers from different orphan centres. We framed it with a simple idea: family is the nucleus of a society; a society looks like its families, and a country looks like its society. In Amharic we added that a nation is built by making good parents.

Caregivers in a centre are parents in every way that matters to the children they raise. Equipping them is one of the most direct ways we know to invest in the next generation.
