Does the end justify the means? In today’s high-pressure world, leadership too often puts outcomes ahead of ethics, process and morality. But real impact comes from how we lead, not only from what we achieve.

That question opened a reflective session we delivered in October 2026 for land-administration directors, organized by Sophos Africa. The theme was authentic, honest and truthful public service. When you manage a resource as vital to a community as land, integrity has to come first.

Six weeks with 25 directors

It continued a longer journey with the same agency. In August 2026 we kicked off a six-week ethical leadership program for 25 directors and experts of the Addis Ababa City Administration Land Holding Registration and Information Agency, organized by Sophos Africa. Over six weeks we worked on the principles that change leadership, institutional culture and workplace values.

The Praxis programme at the Ministry of Justice

Earlier in the year, the same approach went to the Ministry of Justice through Sophos Africa’s Praxis programme. Its purpose, in the programme’s own words, is to inspire, equip and mobilise women and men to critically examine individual, institutional and societal mindsets, cultures, values and behaviours, and to promote personal transformation and institutional change.

The junior prosecutors’ cohort ended with a full day of practical case studies: real professional dilemmas, worked through in groups, followed by an honest feedback session. In July 2026 they received their certificates, and the next phase began the same day with mid-level leaders.

Why ethics needs practice, not just principles

Most people already agree that honesty matters. The hard part is the moment when the honest choice costs something: a deadline, a promotion, a relationship. That is why we do not teach ethics as a list of rules. We put leaders in front of realistic cases and ask them to decide, explain and defend their choice, with colleagues who will push back.

Sophos Africa describes its goal as cultivating “a critical mass of morally transformed and ethically empowered women and men across our nation.” It is a goal we share. Institutions become trustworthy one leader at a time.
